Dear Sitti
I was thinking about our conversation yesterday in the corridor. It sounds like you are feeling frustrated again at not being quite sure how to proceed. I have noticed in your prior writing that you makes lots of notes and can see lots of connections between your research and other literature. But, when you come to write these ideas, you find that there are so many things to say that you find it difficult to start.

Yesterday I suggested to you that you should think of the focus of each of the sections in chapter 6 and write about that focus in a self-contained essay. You were talking about section 6.3, which is about the implications for Indonesia. If you were asked by the Indonesian Government to write a 6 page report on the implications of the Internet for teachers in Indonesia, what would that look like? Would it be a 'stand-alone' report that could be published for teachers and educators to read? If I was a teacher from China, would I get some meaning from your report? The answer to this question is, "I should be able to". Which means that you need to write this section in a way that a Chinese teacher could read your report and understand the Indonesian context and see how your research could relate to the Indonesian context, but also to the Chinese context because they woudl be thinking about their own context as they were reading your paper.

You shoud think like this for the second section in chapter 6 - where you look at the 5 elements of professional development. Think of a title for this piece of work. It also should 'stand alone', which means it should be a contained piece of writing that provides a space for you to analyse your work and to write about your thoughts.

You have written about the five elements for effective professional development in Chapter 2, so you just need to provide a very brief summary of these five elements. Then, you need to restate how you addressed each of these as you worked with Jack.

  1. Was there one apsect that was more important than the others?
  2. Was there one that you did not draw upon?
  3. At what times did your work with Jack start to show very positive signs?
  4. Why did Jack take up the internet for his teaching so slowly when you provided support that aligned to elemetns of effective PD? Even though you have analysed Jack in terms of zone theory, you need to think about what your study has contributed to knowledge about PD and the internet. (This would then flow very nicely to your section on implications for Indonesia as you would have identified elements of effective PD).

So, there are 3 sections in your Discussion Chapter. The first one is about zone theory. The second one is about the wonderful literature that you presented in Chapter 2, and where you now look at this literature and analyse your experience with jack in light of this.

EVen if Jack didn't do as he was supposed to, you need to also consider the potential of the internet for PD becuase it is ongoing. Also, you have evidence that your work with Jack has had postive outcomes because of his email to you when you got to his new job in England. Then, section 3 is the Indonesian context (that I would still like to see finished!!).

(Merrilyn, please feel free to redirect my thoughts here if you feel that I am going away from what we have discussed previously).

See you on the 30th
