Teachers to wait longer for better salaries
JAKARTA (JP): Teachers' hopes of receiving a significant salary increase within the next few years are likely remain little more than a day dreamwith the government refusing to include the expenditure in the state budget for education.
Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo told the Constitutional Court on Wednesday that the allocated education budget was supposed to be spent on facilities, such as school buildings and books, that could directly benefit students.
"Teachers' salaries should not be taken from the education budget, which is supposed to finance students' study," he said.
"Teachers' salaries are allocated under civil servantexpenditures and any increase must be stipulated in that budget allocation."
The government allocated 11 percent or Rp 52.4 trillion (US$5.6 billion) of the state budget for education in 2007 and has raised it by 1 percent to Rp 61.4 trillion for next year. (***) -->
